Who comes to the Hermitage?

Individuals and groups who seek time away for rest, discernment, silence, solitude and renewed vision find the Hermitage to be a peaceful haven where this can happen. The Hermitage Community welcomes persons as guests, staff or volunteers from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The Hermitage does not discriminate because of ethnicity, race, age, gender, economic circumstance or physical ability. We welcome people from all faiths who respect the Christian tradition of The Hermitage Community.

What are your buildings and guest rooms like?

The main retreat house is St. Joseph's Barn, a creatively restored barn with exposed timber-frame construction. It is a multi-level dwelling with a kitchen, dining room, eight bedrooms, one apartment, four full bathrooms, a prayer room and several common sitting areas.  The Ken Hanby Center is the community gathering building with a chapel, meeting room, library, art gallery, office, two guest rooms, one full bathroom and two half bathrooms.

Each guest room is simply furnished with a bed, desk and chair, sitting chair and prayer bench. Sheets and towels are provided.

Where are you located?

The Hermitage is located in southwest Michigan about seven miles west of Three Rivers. We are 60 minutes from South Bend, 50 minutes from Goshen/Elkhart, 30 minutes from Kalamazoo and 80 minutes from Grand Rapids.

What should I bring?

In addition to your personal care items, consider packing the following items:

  • Blanket (for sitting outside or for additional warmth inside)
  • Journal
  • Water bottle
  • Comfortable clothes and shoes
  • Slippers
  • Favorite pillow
  • Extra boots or shoes

Who funds the Hermitage?

The Hermitage Community, Inc. is an independent non-profit corporation that receives its operating expenses from guest donations and charitable giving. It is affiliated with the Mennonite Church but receives no funding from the denomination.
